Incredibly easy socks

I am taking part in a KAL on Ravelry. We are working our way through the alphabet and every two weeks we cast on for the next letter. I was getting a bit behind on finishing my socks because I was spending so much time working on assignments for college, so when we got to I, I was getting a bit desperate to knit something quick and easy and I came up with these socks. They were a good mindless project to work on while trying not to fall asleep at night :) . And then my "I-don't-like-wearing-knit-things-against-my-skin" daughter claimed them for herself! She said they feel different on her feet than her arms or hands, so they are good. Teenagers :P

Well, here is the pattern and if you make a pair, let me know as I would love to see (I like looking at pictures :D ). I have not had anyone test the pattern and I have only made one pair, so if you find any errors, please let me know.

Materials

3.25mm dpn

DK yarn

Gauge

6.5 sts to an inch

Abbreviations

K2tog – knit 2 stitches together

P2tog – purl 2 stitches together

Sl1p – slip 1 stitch as if to purl

SKP – slip 1 stitch, knit 1 stitch, pass slip stitch over knit stitch

Pattern

C/on 48 sts and split evenly among needles (I had 12 sts to a needle)

Knit 8 rounds k1, p1 rib

Change to st.st and knit 20 rounds (knit more rounds if you prefer a longer leg)

Heel
K across first 12 sts, turn

Sl1p, purl 23, turn (you should have 24 sts on a needle now and you will only be working on these sts for now)

*Sl1p, k1* repeat across
Sl1p, purl across

Repeat last 2 rows another 10 times

Turn heel

Sl1p, knit 15, SKP, turn
Sl1p, purl 8, P2tog, turn

Sl1p, knit until one st before gap, SKP, turn
Sl1p, purl until one st before gap, P2tog, turn

Repeat last two rows until all sts are worked (10 sts on needle)

Gusset shaping
Sl1p, knit across. Pick up 13 sts along edge of the flap, knit across instep, pick up 13 sts along the other side of the flap.
Knit across 5 sts left on heel (you should now have 18 sts on each of needles 1 and 4 and 12 each on needles 2 and 3)

Knit to last 3 sts, K2tog, k1. Knit across instep sts. K1, SKP, knit to end.
Knit around.

Repeat last 2 rounds until there are 48 sts again (12 on each needle)

Foot
Knit plain in st.st until 2 inches less than foot length. (I had 63 rounds from rib, counted on the top of the foot and to fit a UK size 7)

Toe

Knit until 3 sts on needle 1, k2tog, k1. On needle 2 k1, SKP. Knit until last 3 sts of needle 3, k2tog, k1 and on needle 4 k1, SKP, knit to end
Knit around.
Repeat last 2 rounds until 24 sts (6 on each needle)

Repeat first round until 8 sts left (2 on each needle)

Kitchener together.

Christmas recycling

I have to do a presentation for English class and the topic is Primary School Curriculum and Fibre crafts, so I thought a recycling project would be a good example. I remembered this link from a while ago and decided to make a few. Quick, easy projects with so many variations. I used wrapping paper, christmas cards, chocolate wrappers, coloured paper and cardboard for these samples. And they are useful as pretty storage containers. Just don't try eating your cereal out of them ;) .

I have been on a bit of a market bag binge lately. I just love making something mindless and quick when I am tired and it is useful. It reduces the need for plastic bags and uses up stash and is so much prettier than some shopping bags you have to buy from the shops. And you don't have to advertise for them either ;)

I don't give a damn". I think that has to be one of my favourite lines from any movie. It is the last thing Rhett says to Scarlett at the end of "Gone with the Wind". I have loved that movie since the first time I saw it as a little girl and I have watched it countless times since then. So when I saw this (scroll down to the 22nd of April), I had to do one as well. Totallee did hers in blues, but I decided to do mine in the yellows, pinks and oranges for the sunset.

I have started my next piece, but it is on hold for a few days while I work on a project for a design student who is having a show next week and needed some help.

Here is the pattern for Edward as mentioned in the previous post. It has not been tested since I typed, so if there are any errors, please email me to let me know.

I used a 4mm hook and double knitting yarn, but you can use any yarn and the appropriate hook for it.

I used 1 skein of black, 1 skein of white and about half a skein of 4 shades of grey (100g skeins). The greys should all range from dark to light. Also a gold/amber colour for his eyes (EC)

Number the colours as follows: Black 0, darkest grey 1, next shade of grey 2, next shade of grey 3, lightest shade of grey 4 and white is 5. I put all my skeins in a basket with holes in the sides, ranging from black down to white so they are in number order and poke the ends of the yarns through the holes. It is just easier for me to have it all in one container and already in place so I can count quickly to the number I want. To change colours I use the cut and tie method explained here

The only sts used are chain and sc (USA) (dc for UK).

I chain 1 to start each row, but it DOES NOT count as a st.

The pattern starts from the bottom right.

Chain 101 and do your first st in the 2nd chain from the hook.

Have I ever told you about my friend Wendy? Well, she has a reputation for being an enabler. For someone like me with almost no willpower, I am often one of her victims. Maybe it is a good thing she lives on another island half way across the world? Could you imagine how many WIP's I would have if she lived any closer? :-O Our latest "addiction" is Crochet by Numbers and we love it. So much that we actually have WIM's planned for the next few months, if not years. This is the Ravelry group where we saw these works of art and this is the website where we learned the technique. Todd is an artist and for a donation will convert your picture for you. You can see on his site and on the Ravelry group the stunning projects people have made. Oops, rambling. Well, I loved the idea so much and having a RPattz and Twilight fan daughter and being a bit of a closet Twilight fan myself :P, I had to try to combine them.

Here are my attempts. I did Jacob first as I pictured him all in browns and browns are what I had in my stash. Last week mom and I went out and I found some more shades of grey (a bit disappointed that I could only find 4 shades so far) and I did Edward. These are going to be backed and used as pillow covers. Kyla claimed Jacob until she realised I could make Edward and immediately gave him back and took Edward for her own LOL.

Cathedral Rose Window

Reading back last year's posts, I made a post about the CRW we were making as part of a CAL. Mine got put to the bottom of the pile. When I moved into the flat, mom gave me her stash of yarn as she decided she would not be using it. In one of the bags was the CRW she had started. So I decided to finish it off as her birthday present (in the process, frogging mine as I decided one was enough for now and I didn't like the colours in mine). I did manage to finish it in time and I think she loved it :D.

Okay, so I must be the worst blogger ever. I can't believe it has been sooooo long since I made a post. I have been very busy making things though, so that should be a great excuse, right? :P Also in December I finally moved into my own place. It is on the 9th floor (the top floor) and we are not going to have a lift for almost 3 months, but I guess that means I don't need a gym membership, right? And as my sister says, it is my penthouse LOL. There is still a lot of decorating to do (not something I have done before and I have decided I don't really like painting), but we are getting there slowly. Okay, enough of the excuses, hopefully you might get to see some things you like soon.

Wips and Wisps

To try and motivate us to finish our projects, we had to show photos of how far along we were on crochet projects. I thought I had more, but only had these few. A chocopink saltine cuddle blanket, the Cathedral Rose window afghan, a blended straight ripple and the Casablanca. I should have a routine worked out eventually when I will be able to work on these on a regular basis so that they go from being WISPs (work in stalled position) to WIPs (works in progress).

Today I am working on getting recycled wool ready for dying in the slow cooker tomorrow.

Hats galore

In May we had a "Finishing Month" as our project for the month in the Sky Cal on Crochetville. One of the projects I decided to work on and finish was the Chapeau ghan I started in January (I think). I used scrap yarn for the hat parts and black for the borders. I like how the afghan turned out, I am thinking I might make another one, with the hats in pinks and purples and the borders in a different shade of pink. What do you think?

New crafts

January I started a needlecraft class and we have been doing different things. One thing I have finished is making a fabric covered box. It seemed complicated, but once we started, it was easy. The most difficult being to make sure that the edges were straight so that everything could be fitted together. I painted the fabric, too. Well, here is the finished box, made for DD's 12th birthday.

Okay, so it isn't a word, but I am sure you know what I mean. :) So I went trawling the net to find something to make and finally found this cute pattern on etsy. I made the bunny really quickly and am impressed with the results. Toy making is not something I am good at, so I was happy how it came out. The pattern was well written and easy to follow and I would recommend it to anyone. I will probably be buying more of Debi Birkin's patterns in the future. Okay, enough of the rambling, photo time. :)

Learn to knit afghan

Over on Crochetville some of us in the Sky Cal are doing a KAL (knit-a-long). We are using Barbara G. Walker's "Learn to Knit afghan book". 99 Granny squares to crochet

Over on Crochetville in the Sky Cal, some of us are doing a CAL using the "99 Granny Squares to crochet" book. Each week one person will choose which square and another will choose how many, neither person knows who the other person is. We are into our 3rd week and are having fun watching it come together. Week one was 4 of square 44, week two was 3 of square 34 and week 3, we did 5 of square 5. lol Strange coincidences, right? lol Well, here are the pictures from the first three.

The white, yellow and green blanket is a diagonal pattern from here. I followed the advice of a friend and used three colours, that way you can carry the yarn not in use up the side and not have a lot of ends to weave in. It was a quick and easy blanket to make. The green bolero is 6 months size made from "Sirdar 1763". The pink and green poncho sweater and beret was made for a Secret Santa swap I did in December. I was showing them to family members and my nephew wanted to try it on. lol. He is cute and loves modelling things, even if it was for a girl.

Here are some of the latest pictures.

The pink/yellow/blue is a BSJ made with some yarn a friend sent me from Australia, I love the yarn. The denim coloured sweater is a double breasted jacket from pattern "Sirdar 1754". The white with flecks is a Shifio pattern, really easy and quick pattern to crochet. And the flannel receiving blanket that I crocheted an edge onto. It was easier than I expected to crochet onto flannel, I will be making more. Well, I have to do something with all the meters of flannel I have. :)

I did make a few other things that slipped my mind. I knitted a sweater for my step nephew and luckily remembered to take a photo before I posted it to him. I also crocheted another hooded cardigan, this time for my niece. It is done in pink and orange Rio yarn and come out really well. It is too big for her at the moment. I also knitted a Babe from "Five Babes and their outfits" for DD. Well, we let my niece and nephew play with them and in the end we had to send it home with them. Nephew bit the eyes off and gave them to me, Niece likes smooshing it in her face and running her fingers through the hair. :D

I also made a baby sized Irish Chain blanket in pink, purple and green. Nothing much, just trying to blog regularly and add pictures as I go. Hope you are all having a good Sunday.

Almost normal

Well, so much for keeping the blog up to date. :P I have been busy, really, I have. The summer holidays started in the middle of July, I was given notice to move from our house, then at the end of the holidays decided to move in with mom. Then DD started highschool, now that is a scary thought. She loves her new school, it is a performance art kind of school and that is just what she needs. Last week they did auditions for a play and she is really excited about the play, even if she gets the smallest role.

Now, what have I been making? I was making things in between all of this. There was the "Crochetville Ancient Games of Greece" while the Olympic games were on. Even though I was disqualified, I had a lot of fun. I had originally planned to make my sister a double bed sized afghan for her birthday, just after the start of the Games I realised I actually needed some baby blankets, so changed my challenge to 5 baby blankets instead (hence the disqualification). Well, I managed to finish the 5 blankets. Pictures to follow. One was a baby gingham in blues, there were 2 hearts shawls (one in beige & white and one in a silvery white), a ruffles shawl from Shifio's website, and a blanket of my own in white and purple.

I have also been making some more baby matinee jackets and was playing around with the idea of booties and socks, but oh, those baby socks are finicky on DPN's! I have now got a pattern for some 2 needle baby socks, if I can work my around that, I might give the DPN's a try again, if I get shorter ones. I bought the cutest crochet shoe pattern on Etsy by Hollanddesigns. She has the cutest baby patterns in her Etsy store and the shoes were quick and easy to make. And the end result so CUTE! My SIL loved the pair I made for my niece, I really need to make her some more. Every little girl deserves at least one pair of these shoes. I did make a dress out of matching yarn, but we weren't too impressed with that. Win some, lose some. ;) And I made a dress from the Crochet! magazine.

Now that life is normal (well, as normal as anyone can hope for), maybe I will remember to blog more regularly. I can hope, can't I?

This week I have finishitus. I have been finishing off things that I started when I had crocheting ADD. Yup, I start things, see something else I like and move onto that. Well, this week I am finishing off things to get ready for Saturday. I found a matinee jacket and bonnet I started last year, didn't take long to do the sleeves and bonnet, I finished the hexagon cardigan I started last week or the week before. This pattern is quick and easy, I saw one some over on Crochetville had made and had to try it. She got the pattern from a youtube.com video. It is in Portuguese (I think) but the visuals are good and easy to follow. I finished the bigger camo hooded cardigan and the Bus Cuddle. I also got some yarn from a friend in the US and I used some of it to make a matinee jacket. The yarn is lovely, white with green and blue flecks with a silver thread running through it. Everything still needs buttons, I don't like sewing buttons on and wait until I have a few things that need buttons before doing that. I will be sewing them on tomorrow. :)

Over on the 'Ville someone is having a bet for not buying yarn until Christmas Eve, a lot more willpower than me, I would've failed miserably, I bought 2 cones yesterday. I can't resist a bargain, I went into a charity shop and found some cones for £0.99 each and bought 2 white ones.

I am making some more hexagon cardigans and hopefully I might have more pictures next week. Have a good weekend. :)

So much for regular updates! I think it is more than a month since I posted anything new. I have no excuses, I don't know what happened. :)

I have finished the white hearts and roses shawl (start in previous post), I made a green one as well (I like the pattern, what can I say?), I have made a Gingham Baby blanket from one of my favourite sites, The Happy Yellow House. I have made a hooded cardigan in camo type yarn, came out better than I expected and I am now making a bigger one for my step-nephew in South Africa, almost finished, just needs to be put together and the edges done. I am considering making for my niece and nephew as well, I have almost decided on colours for them and maybe sewing a springbok motif on it for them. I haven't taken photos of the bangle bags I have made as by now you know what they look like, I just change the yarn and colours for each one. On Saturday is a summer fete at the school and I have a stall to show and sell some of the things I have made. DD thinks I should make 80 bags as each of the girls at school will want to buy one. I think she is being slightly ambitous, so not sure if I can make that many in 4 days. lol
There is a picture of the progress of the Bus cuddle I am making for my nephew as a Christmas present (I am trying to get a headstart on those projects) and also some of the hats I made for the lady in London. Silly me forgot to take photos of the two I made before that which were quite interesting in that they had different shaped patches put on them. I feel like I have made loads in the last month, but it doesn't look like I have done much. Hmmmm. Enjoy the pictures.

I had decided to do regular updates on my blog and already I am not keeping to it. :) A few things going on here which are swirling around my mind and making me think about a lot of things going on in my life, so not going to talk too much in this post, just going to put in some pictures and a little bit of descriptions. I made another toddler dress from the pattern I got from a friend, but changed it a little bit. I made the skirt part more lacy and put the heart patch on the bodice instead of the skirt. When DD saw it she said I should make one in the opposite colour combination, so I did. I also tried a top pattern I bought from luv2crochet. The pattern was very easy to follow and it worked up quickly. I don't usually work with orange, but thought it was a nice bright colour for a child. I finished up the rainbow ghan this morning and I really like the pattern, I am going to make more. I won't show more pictures of the triquetra ghan as the last 2 blocks are identical to the first two. The ghan isn't far from being finished, so there should be a photo of the completed item soon. I have been plodding along with the bus cuddle as a christmas present for my nephew, thanks to Krystal's bat that she swings around over on Crochetville. I started another baby blanket today, it is called "Hearts and Roses" and I bought it from someone on e-Bay. It was over a year ago, so can't remember who the seller was, but the designer as far as I know was Nanna G. I also made another two of Inga's bags, I am trying to use the yarn I have that is not suitable for baby items, the bags still need to be lined. Enjoy the pictures. :) I also need to mention that a friend of mine, Helda, had an article published. Helda started the London Crochet Meetup and also has a podcast. I will put a link to the podcast on the blog soon.

I almost forgot to write about the package I received last week! My friend over on Crochetville said she would be sending me a pattern along with my friendship squares, I got more than that! She is a very sweet lady who has spoilt me. :) The pattern was for the cutest little toddler dresses and she sent yarn, too. Gorgeous yarn that is going to be used for something special. I have made a dress from the pattern already and am working on the second one. I have changed the pattern of the skirt for this one and will show pictures of that another time. For now, here are the pictures of what was in the package and the first dress.

Bags, bags, bags

This weekend I decided to have a bag weekend. I made Inga's bag. It was quick and easy, except for the lining, but once I got the hang of it, I enjoyed sewing the lining. I was very impressed with the way it come out. I only did 4 rounds for each square, I think next time I might do 5 to see how much bigger the bag will be. I also made the Shell Bag from the Happy Yellow house website. Also easy and quick. And then I made some more bangle bags while I watched Law & order Saturday night. I have done some more saltines for the bus cuddle and rows on the triquetra ghan, but haven't taken updated photos of those yet. Just as well, it took me an hour and half just to load these few pictures, not sure if problem with the laptop or the card reader yet. I am almost finished with the first dress from the pattern a friend sent me last week, I will put a photo of that up next time as well. DD has her SATS this week, so please think of her and send her good thoughts. I can't believe she will be starting high school in September. When she got back from her school trip 2nd May, she told me she had a good time and she wasn't tired, 5 hours later I got this photo of her and she slept for 13 hours! Definately a sign she had a good time. ;)

I feel like I haven't done much this week, so here are the photos of a few things. I have done some more on the triquetra ghan for DD's birthday (in a month from today) and I might actually get done in time. I have done 2 of the 4 squares and they are so quick and easy to do. I am enjoying the filet work. Also I have kept up to date with the saltines for the first cuddle ghan for christmas. It is the Wheels on the Bus Cuddle. It is the second one I am making and I am having as much fun this time as the first time around. I am adding extra rows to the top and bottom. I have made some little dresses as well, using surprising little yarn and quick and easy to make. When I can motivate myself to do it, I will type up the pattern and make it available on my blog. Maybe I should see if anyone asks for the pattern? wink, wink. If anyone is interested, let me know and it will probably get me to do it sooner, rather than later. My other projects were a Rainbow set ghan I have started. I drooled over it when Aussie on Crochetville made it and decided I needed to make one as well. It does not have an owner yet, but maybe soon. And then there is the comfortghan I put together for another Crochetville friend krazy-kitty. She got the package this morning so it is save to show the picture now. There are squares from America, Australia and the UK in the ghan, so it is an international effort. And then there was the capelet I tested for somebody. It is very pretty and easy to make.

Unexpected visitor

I got an email from my sister last week and forgot I wanted to post the pictures here. She works in Scarborough in South Africa (we grew up in SA) and she had this visitor at work for a while. I was born and bred in SA and don't remember seeing many snakes, I always thought they slithered away when they heard someone coming. So here is the email she sent

"Well, we are used to baboons, mongoose, birdlife, tortoises and such BUT today we had a puff adder right below our deck!!

A couple of pics attached!!"

And here are the pics. She told me today the snakehandler came to take him away and will send me more pictures. I will put them up as well. The lucky girl is also going on safari to Botswana next week as part of her job. She works for a safari company
and there is even bit about Tanya if you scroll down the page. She will hopefully send me some pics of that trip, too.

Spring is here, maybe?

All afternoon I have heard gardening equipment and children outside. I am sure that is a sign of spring and I can only hope. We walked into town this morning to get some things for DD's school trip next week (where am I supposed to find wool socks for children? Could only find mens socks that fitted the description, nothing for women or children!) and it was quite warm. By the time we got back I was hot and hurt. I have blisters on my ankles (well, they started on Thursday) and I am tired, but we got our things and I could relax for the rest of the day. I did my Christmas Cal commitments, so here are updated pictures of the bus cuddle and DD's filet blanket for her birthday. I have a hard time putting it down once I get into the rhythm, I am enjoying making it and I love working with the yarn I was given. I have started making a top for DD, she is deciding on what she wants and I am making it. I am about half way with the swinging part of the top and then it is just the shoulder straps to make. It can be worn on it's own or over a t-shirt or long sleeve top if it is a cooler day. The other baby things are just some more to add to my stock collection. I had to hand in my business plan on Thursday and R was very impressed with it. I am now just waiting to find out about having a stall at the Spring fair as my first "gig". :) Also are the two hats I had to finish off for the school trip next week. I still have to make two pairs of mittens, but I am going to make these, which are quick and easy to make.
And in case you are wondering, I took the picture of the biscuit tin OPEN to show that I am not sitting eating biscuits while I am working (I saw the tin in a corner of one of the photos), it is actually the tin I use to keep my buttons in.

Progress for the week

I have been busy with lots of little things. I have to make stock and do a business plan for the self-employment scheme, as well as researching all different places to sell, insurance, etc. I did do some crocheting in between and here are some pictures to show the progress I have been making. I finally finished the sleeping bag for the lady in London, it got posted this morning. I have made 5 baby summer dresses, the bodices are crocheted and the skirts are fabric and there is a motif on the bodice from the same material as the skirt. These are really quick and easy to make. I also made a 3-in-1 dress in white and green. It is a Shifio pattern (I bought a lot of her patterns and have decided to start making the things now :)). I am taking part in the Row a day 'til Christmas Cal on Crochetville and my first project is another Wheels on the Bus cuddle from here. There is also the Shawler for DD that I have been working on in Marble DK, I like the way it stripes and I will be working on it again soon. Today I started a shell bag from here. The patterns on that site are really easy and fun to do. I started a ghan for DD's birthday, I am doing triquetra's in filet. I was going to do it in graphs, but I was getting all knotted up, so decided that for my first graph project I need to find something with not quite so many changes and when I am happy with that, I will attempt a triquetra graph again. Also, I need to hurry as it is less than two months to get finished. I did 9 rows last night on the first square and then found out that I had made a mistake in the beginning, so to the pond I go. And then there is the dishcloth I made from some recycled cotton using one of the patterns I got from my Secret Pal. It was fun and easy to make and it feels so soft. Now, just to get brave enough to start dying all the cream coloured cotton I have. I also made another bangle bag and have started another baby dress in white and purple.

ooooooohhhhhh, ooohhhhhh, aaaaahhhhhhhh. Those are the sounds of me unpacking my reveal package from my secret pal, ldyer1. I got the package this morning after waiting ALL WEEKEND for it as I had missed the delivery man on Friday and he left a card saying he would be back today. Well, I hope the photos appear in the order I took them, I took them as I unpacked the box.
There was a very nice letter, 2 HUGE skeins of Sugar 'n Cream cotton yarn (variegated and yellow), 2 pattern books for dishcloths (I have loads of recycled cotton which I am going to use to practice to make these), dolphin sitckers, 2 trivets in the same colours as the cotton and which will fit perfectly in my kitchen when I am in a place of my own (I want to make my kitchen yellow, bright and sunny and cheery), Reece's peanut butter cups which I love (having a hard time controlling myself from eating them all and not sharing with DD :) ), yarn cutter pendant, folding scissors, row counters, snapitz bracelets, charm bases and charms for DD, some lemonade with what looks like sour worms and two skeins of green RHSS. I am so LUCKY, :). Thank you, Calico Anne for a great swap and I made 2 new friends doing this swap.

Been a busy week (kind of). I did make an outfit for the doll, I wrote down the pattern and am making another one and waiting for DD to find another in her room (sty?) so I can try it on and make sure I wrote it down correctly. My SIL had her baby, at last, on 9th April, I am now aunty to a new niece, 8lb 6oz at birth! She is pretty and I can't wait to see her in real life and both Nana's granddaughters have birthdays on the 9th (just in different months). DD is pleased that she is 10 years and 10 months older than her new cousin. I had made a few different outfits for the baby, not knowing whether it was a girl or boy, so when I found out I just finished off this outfit for her and posted it today with the Drum ghan (see previous post). The hat was from Shifio , the cardigan was my own design (I think it still needs a bit of tweeking) and the bottees were from Bev's pattern. Then there are the new thing, the bangle bag, It is a pattern available from here, it is designed by bettycrackpot and she let me test it. Thank you. It was easy and I will be making more.
I had an interview this morning about becoming selfemployed, looks promising. Yayyy.

Little things

On Wednesday I found out my step nephew was sick and decided to make him something, so I made him a teddy from the Teddies for Tragedies pattern. It was quick and easy to make. DD said his sister also needed to have something, so she gave a little doll (just under 4 inches tall) and asked if I could make something for it. I made a crochet cradle purse for it, also quick and easy. The pillow and blanket are my own, even though the pillow did come out a bit big. Now, DD says the doll needs an outfit, so I am off to make that now. :)

Cheap and cheerful

I haven't done too much that can be put on my blog yet. I posted my Swap Partners reveal package to her yesterday, so she should have it next week. What I can show is the Drum Afghan I made, which DD has decided should be for the new baby that was due last Saturday. As we still don't know what it is, a multicoloured blanket should be perfect for it. DD wanted it, but I said no. Well, I am going to be making her a graphghan for her birthday in Bratz colours with a triquetra and my mom is making her a quiltghan with a cat on it.
I found the book "220 Aran Stitches" for £0.85 in a charity shop, another addition to my collection of crochet and knitting books. You can never have too many books or too much yarn, right?
Then the two outfits are what DD designed and made herself for her dolls. She is knitting scarves/shawls to match them and she wants to make shoes as well. She is very pleased with herself for all that, as she should be. Hopefully there will be more to add next time.

Today has been a great day for post!! Two international parcels and one local. The local one was actually for DD, but great post. It was the book where her poem has been published! She was excited when she first found out it was going to be published, but her face when she got the book today and saw it in the book was priceless. Then there were the things for me, one BIG box of yarn all the way from America, thank you so much, you know who you are. And perfect colours for something I want to make for DD's room, too. And there was a skein of Sugar n Creme which I have only seen pictures of and now finally get to try out and the set of crochet hooks for DD which she will test when she is home again. Then there was the envelope all the way from South Africa, from the bestest sister. 15, yes that's right, 15 stitch markers from her etsy stock. Now, to find the projects to use them with. I have been really blessed with stitch and row markers this year, I think that means I should get some more WIP instead of WIM? ;)

Doesn't look like much

Well, I have been making things this week, just can't show too much of it. I am still plodding along with things for my Secret Pal, but will be finished soon. I have to have it in the post by the 1st of April. Once she has her reveal package, I will post the pictures. Well, for the things I can post, there is a banana bread (hit with the children, so might do that again) normal white bread (need to get some brown bread or whole meal flour) and the baby cardigan I made. It is very straightforward, all dc and then knitted ribs.
First day of the Easter holidays yesterday, DD was out the whole day with friends and I suspect that will be the routine for most of the holidays. I am still waiting for the sleep over questions, but not YET. Well, if she is busy with friends, I guess that leaves me more time for my own things, right? Now, just to get some way of cooking and cleaning that I can crochet at the same time. ;)

New things, more yarn

Well, the other day I was browsing through Ravelry I came across a group called "Thrifty Knitters". I was curious and had a look and came across a section about taking apart sweater/jumpers/jerseys and reclaiming the yarn to use. Me, being a little bit thrifty, decided to have a go. well, I am very impressed with myself. I found 3 100% cotton items (one sweater and 2 cardigans) at charity shops and bought them. I washed them and then started taking apart. I forgot to take a picture of the first cardigan. It was a bolero style one with a big pink button in the front (very pretty and I am going to find a use for it on a bag or something) and made from a lovely soft fluffy type of cotton. I took it apart (using tutorials I found in"The Thrifty Knitters") and I have a few skeins of lovely yarn to make something with. I was so excited that it had been so easy that I couldn't wait to try the next one, but I had to wait overnight for it to dry. Well, this morning I started and it was also easy. I did remember to take before and after shots this time. It is blue and white and when unravelling I found that there were two strands of each colour. Now, I just need to decide what to make with them. I will post about that once I have made something. After doing the wpi test I found out that both lots are a DK weight, my favourite, so I shouldn't have any problems at all making something with them.

House

I took a photo of the house we are living in, to show some friends. It was a lovely sunny day today as you can see from the background. I have not edited the photos in any way, so that really is the colour the sky was. Our bedrooms are the top floor and you can see my open bathroom window on the side. The house is comfortable inside. The other photo is of the building they are still doing behind us. That is a side view of what you would be able to see from my bedroom window which faces out back.

I did it, I did it. I finished my first ever hand made wedding present!! Last year I got this insane idea that I should make wedding presents for my family from now on. After months of debating what to make, then deciding on a table cloth, getting the materials, then deciding that I didn't like it, getting more materials and starting 3 (yes, that's right, three) times, I got some more yarn and started this round ripple blanket. I used a Shifio baby shawl pattern, used a strand each of DK and 4-ply with a 9mm crochet hook and made this. Well, she got married in November (yep, delayed reaction) and now in January I finished her present. All it needs now is to get it wrapped and posted to South Africa. I have had the card a few months, but as they say, better late than never. Lets just hope the present for her sister getting married in May gets made and posted in time.

Progress and presents

After having a lovely sunny (but cold) day yesterday, we are back to windy, grey days today, the perfect day to sit indoors, watch tv and craft. I still wish I was back in South Africa though, I am missing my family and friends (and the warmth and sun) even more and feeling extremely homesick today. So I decided to try to cheer myself up and update my blog today to say, I have the BEST sister in the world, I got a lovely present from her in the post today. She sent us each a necklace with our birthstones and they are lovely. And trust her to find the cutest little boxes to store them in, too.
I haven't been working on much this week, just working on WIP and trying to decide what else to make. :) I did one pattern repeat on the knitted cardigan, made a few squares for the Casablanca (wow, it is going to be big), made some squares out of leftovers for a blanket (I have decided to help my daughter and make a blanket for the organisation she wants to help). The other pictures are DD's progress on the blanket she is making and the lovely presents from my little sister. Thank you SO MUCH sister for brightening up my day.

So many projects, so little time. :)

Well, I have been busy this week. Started 2 new projects and carried working on two that I had started last year and one I had started on New Years Day. I have also taken a photo of my DD's project. She saw a website that one of my old teacher's has here They are doing a lot of good there and DD was touched by their work and has decided she wants to knit a blanket for them as well. I have started my own quiltghan, it is slow going, but I love this ghan and can't wait to get more time to work on it. And then there is the cardigan I started for a friend last year, which was meant to be her Christmas present (well, ok, maybe she can have it for next Christmas :) ). Only joking, she deserves to get it as soon as it is finished.
Oh, and christmas came for me again!! My bamboo circular knitting needles arrived yesterday and they are BLISS to work with. I transferred the cardigan I was knitting over to them last night and they are so comfortable to knit with.

Holiday projects

Finally got around to taking pics of the things I made and started while I was on holiday. The Bratz outfits were for my daughter's doll that she got for Christmas, very quick and easy. Donna has some great patterns here

I made a baby doll carrier that I still need to post and now my daughter wants one for her Bratz Big Baby

I also started a ripple blanket for my cousin as a wedding present. I have taken a separate picture of the yarn I am using as the the picture of the ripple itself does not show up the pattern in the yarn.

New year

Well, it took me long enough to add another post to my blog! I have no excuses, apart from being busy before christmas with getting work finished so we could enjoy the holiday and working on some presents. I did remember to take SOME pictures of the things I made.

The wavy lapghan was for my grandmother, the orange colours scarf was for my daughter's teacher and the the blue scarf and hat were gifts for my cousin. I made another set for the sister-in-law in a sea-green, but forgot to take pictures of it.
What makes you think the two children might be related? Those are my cheeky daughter and my loveable 10-month old nephew (well, he was when I took the photo :) ).

Christmas is coming

I have finished another lapghan for Christmas (for my grandfather) and part way with the matching one for my grandmother, then only one more left for my cousin (I think). I still have to decide what to make for the other members of my family, maybe turkish slippers or faceclothes? Who knows? :) Here are the pics anyway.

At last, I have finished a blanket I have been working on as a gift for a family member. I didn't make anything for the baby as she had a lot and the parents didn't find out if they were having a boy or girl, they wanted a surprise. So when we found out she had a girl and the name, I decided to make this for her. As usual, my phototaking isn't very good. The pink is a bit lighter and the dark bits are actually a dark pink, not red! The purple is also a bit lighter. I am trying to think of something to hide the gap in the R, maybe a flower?

I have finished my first cuddle ghan (I still have 2 more bus ones to do and a few other little ones). It is the bus I have been reporting progress on for a few weeks now. I haven't done much more than that as I moved this week as well. I have added a few more things to my WIM list, just not sure if I will get around to doing everything before Christmas :(.

I have become addicted to crocheting little squares for quiltghans!!!! I have worked on my Bus Ghan most of the week, but looking at the picture it doesn't look like I have done much. I can't wait to start on some of the other projects I want to make as christmas presents. I have the colours and yarn all sorted for them, they have been staring at me since Sunday. And the addiction is contagious. My mom started making a quiltghan for herself, and has now bought the yarn and started making one for my daughter as well, in the process using the design that I found for my cousin and was considering making for my daughter!! Anyway, I decided (almost) that I would be making the Love letters one for her from Happy Yellow House website.

I went to the market today to get yarn for a cardigan I am going to knit for a friend and I was good, mostly. I only ended up buying two extra balls of wool from a charity shop, a bargain at 50p each, now I just need to decide what to make with it.

Well, the pictures are the progress of my Bus Ghan, the yarn and pattern of the cardigan I am going to start (if I can tear myself away from Crochetville) and the yarn from the charity shop.

Some sort of normality

We finally got back from visiting my cousin and school has started. I haven't done as much as I would have liked over the last two weeks, but here is some of the progress I have made. I finished the baby shawl that is a gift for somebody, it is in pale blue and I have left the ribbons out as it is for a boy. I have made 4 hats for my sister, 2 brown, 1 grey and one multicoloured (she wanted it made from leftovers, so that is kind of what she got). The other project I am working on is a cuddle afghan, I am hoping to get a few done as christmas presents for all the younger children in my family. The picture shows the progress on the School Bus cuddle for one of the boys.

Busy days

This has been a busy week and a bit for us. Last week we went to Rochester Castel on the Friday and on Sunday we went to Deal Castle near Dover. But guess what I had in my bag each time? That's right, my yarn and hook went with each time. Not that I got to do any at Rochester Castle, but I did get to work on the baby shawl while watching the children at the seafront in Deal (photo compliments of my daughter). Then later on in the week I taught my cousin to crochet, he got the hang of it really quickly and is impressed with himself for crocheting a square to go with my next Iggle Piggle. Today was Crochet Group meetup, and I couldn't go to join them, I do miss chatting to my fellow hookers (you know what I mean). So instead today I made a homemade chicken pie. Came out a bit darker than I wanted, but we will be eating them soon. I have attached a photo of the baby shawl at 26 rounds, coming along nicely, and one of the Bus Cuddles from http://www.happyyellowhouse.com/bus.html I have started in the top left hand corner. Can't wait to see what the rest of it is going to look like! I am having fun with this pattern and can't wait to try some of the others on this website. The designer is really talented.

Knitting and crochet

I have had a busy few days while waiting for the weather to improve. I knitted the children each a jelly baby, which they enjoyed playing with. Then my cousin suggested that I make an Iggle Piggle from "In the Night Garden" as his son is a big fan, I was nagged into designing one for him. I am quite pleased with the result, it does need a bit of tweaking, but the first try wasn't too far off. My cousin's son seemed impressed with his Iggle Piggle and I am impressed with myself for designing him! I have started typing up the pattern for future use. I have also started crocheting a baby shawl to send to my stepsister in South Africa for her baby son. I have also a few new projects that I will be starting for Christmas presents, will be putting pictures up once I do start them. The first two are blankets from http://www.happyyellowhouse.com/ website which has some stunning quilt blanket patterns on it. I will be making the school bus blankets for my nephew and cousin's son. Will keep updated on the other projects to be started.

Holiday and hobbies

We have been visiting with my cousin in Kent for a little while, so lovely and peaceful here. We went camping last week and enjoyed that, too. Not the best weather for camping, but we did have fun. The children had a ball and of course I had my crocheting with me (can't go anywhere without that!)

I decided to venture out into the high street on the bus this afternoon with the children and (surprise, surprise) I ended up with more patterns and yarns. Well, what is visiting new places for if you can't get some things that make you happy? I had a peep around a charity shop to see what they had (and apart from the children getting a doll and a train) I got a book of knitting patterns to knit my daughter and cousin's son some mini toys, they have decided on the jelly babies. I might go back to buy some more of the patterns as they had a few Jean Greenhowe patterns and I only bought the one booklet (what was I thinking of!) So of course, I had to get the yarn to make them with as well as I hadn't brought a lot of yarn with me, figuring I could just get some more if I needed it, which I always do. I also got a lovely old booklet with crochet doilies, etc in it. I got the crochet cotton on my last holiday in Great Yarmouth, so now I can complete a project with bits bought at different places during the holidays, it will be a real holiday project :).

I am feeling a bit pleased with myself, sold my first two crochet hats on ebay. I have only ever sold knitted scarves and knitted baby doll outfits, so this is a first for me. I hope the customer likes them, I posted them to her today. I bought the pattern intending to make a hat for my brother, ended up making hats for my daughter and then decided to try selling them. My sister in South Africa has placed an order for two hats as well, so will be quite busy crocheting hats for a little while.

Innocent village fete

We had a lovely time at the innocent village fete, can't wait to be able to go again. There was something for everyone and the weather was perfect. The best part was, of course, the knitting tent. We went to have a look and stayed for about 2 hours! We made some hats for the big knit and my daughter found out she wasn't the only child that could knit! She looked around at the other children, looked at me and said (in shock) "So I am not the only child that can knit?" She was so happy that she immediately started knitting and didn't want to leave!!! There was good music to listen to while we were knitting and the atmosphere was relaxed and friendly.

The village fete gets my vote. We will be visiting more parks with needles and crochet hooks and enjoy ourselves.

I had a good week away in Great Yarmouth visiting family and relaxing, but I could not resist looking at and buying more yarns!!! I got some lovely fun yarns and a bag full of crochet cotton which I am hoping to use to make potpourri bags with. I also got a crochet jewellery kit to try my hand at crocheting jewellery.

And I did make some things while I was on holiday, too. I finished the vest top for my daughter and I made a matching hat, but haven't photographed it, yet. Here is a picture of the first one I made for her, she loves modelling the things when she is in the mood to do it.

I am supposed to be going to visit again later in the school holidays, but I don't know if I can trust myself in the shops there! I also made a mobile phone cover, a nintendo ds cover and some flowers, will take more photos when I have put the press studs on them. Did I say earlier I was on holiday? Well, it must have been a good holiday if I got time to do my favourite things, like knitting and crocheting.

Made a few things this week and got some new supplies (oops). Heard that John Lewis was having a sale, so went to have a look and ended up buying a lot. I really should not take my debit card when I go out!!

Here are some pics of the things I was busy with this week. I crocheted a box (pattern from Simply crochet) and knitted two cloths to put in it for my daughter's teacher as a end of year gift. My daughter loved it (she is still waiting for her socks, though).

And of course, a picture of my new stash of yarn.

There is also a picture of my other new hobby, making ring slings for babies. I loved this material when I saw it and makes the slings look so lovely.

This week has been busy, but have managed to finish some things. Here is a picture of the dolls dress I have finished.

I have also been trying patterns in a new book I bought, my mom has the slippers now.

I have started knitting some barbie furniture and going to crochet a box to fill with goodies for my daughters teacher as an end of school year gift, so got my new projects all sorted. Apart from the sewing and embroidery I have been playing around with on my new machine. It took me a few tries but I finally managed to embroider a picture that actually looked like something (well, to me anyway.) I might take a photo of something and post it soon.
